We are honored to be part of the July/August 2011 edition of Midwest Living magazine. The photos on the web and in the magazine look incredible. They managed to avoid capturing the weedy spots and really focused on the charm of this place. Special thanks to everyone on the team that spent some early mornings with us! It was fascinating to see and be a part of the process.

And welcome new visitors to our blog! We hope you will find some of our experiences useful and entertaining. And perhaps you will encourage us to explore new plants, trees, garden structures and veggies. We certainly hope so!

As bad as I am with last names, could you be the same Anne that stops in occasionally for a treat at the coffee shop? I was pleasantly surprised to see the article in my Midwest Living! Great pics, very impresive!!

Wow!!! After looking at those beautiful Midwest Living photos of your place, the phrase “This isn’t heaven, it’s Iowa” never rang more true.

You should be proud. Very cool what you’re doing.

    • Alan says:

Thanks Matt! It is comments like these that remind me to pause for a moment and appreciating our surroundings. I haven’t even hung the hammock up yet this year. I should do that.

seeing this brings tears to my eyes, knowing what you have made from our farm that raised 4 girls who were raised with values and hard work,, thanks so much for allowing all 4 of us to come see and walk around our childhood farm, mom and dad would be so proud of what you have done with it and the fact that it just didnt get burned to the ground for farmland.

    • Sara Rogers Sheets says:

Bonnie, I grew up in Toledo..my father was Gress Rogers. I was visiting this site after seeing the Midwest Living article. Anne told me the name of the owner of their farm, as I emailed her to say I was familiar with the area.
Your name really sounds familiar..did you graduate with any of my older siblings; Debbie, Doug or Vicki? Were you in 4H? Work with my Dad at the extension office?

Hi Sarah–I saw your message to Bonnie, who is my sister. I went to school with your brother Doug. I think our dad worked with the ag office that was connected to the Extension office or maybe through the extension office–can’t remember. It was such a surprise to see our old homestead featured in this magazine. Anne & Alan have done such a beautiful job there.

Hi Bev, I too was surprised and pleased to see the article. Sometimes I athink our corner of the world is forgotten!
Dad was the county extension director in Tama county for over thirty years.
I did email Doug this article along with asking if anyone was in school with you gals. Are any of you living in this area? I know the Vore name..Ron was in my class of ’61.
          thanks for replying! Sara

          • Bev Seidel Vore says:

Sara– Ron lives in Belle Plaine. We live in Vining. Jerry is in Toledo, Sue- Legrand, Gloria- Grinnell, & Linda- Newton. None too far from “home”.

HI, I really enjoyed seeing your article in Midwest Living. What a wonderful farm you have I wish you all the success in the world. I am going to Cedar Rapids this Friday for a family event, do you ever have visitors at your place to see the farm or do you prefer not to. Although my wife and 2 kids live near Milwaukee, WI. we get to your area often to see family in CR and my son who is a Sophmore at U of Iowa(Go Hawks). I’m sure I will be ordering soon! Bob S.
