The garlic harvest arrived extra early this year – end of June. With the extra heat, everything is moving quickly. And with the lack of rain in our part of Iowa, everything is drying up. I was pleasantly surprised with how well the garlic managed considering the low precipitation. The bulbs could have been more consistent in size had they received more watering, but I’m not going to complain about what they managed to accomplish.

If you do not already grow garlic, here are some reasons I think you should:

  • Planted in the Fall – one of the first signs of Spring
  • Virtually pest-free
  • Scapes make for good pesto or stir-fry or flower bouquets
  • Keeps rather well
  • Can be expensive at the store
